We had a few days before the lab season this year to go visit some friends' localities and become acquainted with a very different region. After a quick 6 hours of sleep in Cape Town, and a morning tour of the Univ. of Cape Town Archaeology Department (Thanks Jayne and Ben!), we drove north toward Clanwilliam. From there, we turned inland to the mountains, and drove along a ridge at a visually stunning ecotone (a place where two different biomes meet). On one side, the Table Mountain sandstones were craggy and covered in fynbos vegetation, on the other, horizontally-bedded shales made mesa-like structures in the succulent Karoo biome.
Alex MacKay with his family and crew were great hosts, and showed us a couple of stunning sites they're investigating. We also got to tour Hollow Rock Shelter and see a bit of rock art. Wish we had more time up there.
